Global Warming: The Greatest Crisis of Our Lives?

Climate Change

Climate change is no longer something future generations will have to deal with; it is happening today and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats to our planet. Higher temperatures, more changeable rainfall, increased extreme weather events and rising sea levels are all adding to the pressure on the Earth’s natural resources. And if you are not concerned for yourself, then be concerned for your children.

“The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril.”

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

The world, through the United Nations, has acknowledged that we must take urgent action to cut the human-induced greenhouse gases that are causing global warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in the early 1990’s as a global scientific body to provide a view on the current state of climate change. The IPCC produces regular Assessment Reports which highlight that the world is facing a grave future based on our current consumption patterns. Global warming is now arguably the single biggest sustainability issue to face the world.

So where does this leave us? “The consequences of climate change have become a very important strategic issue for us all,” stresses the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes that “greater energy efficiency and new technologies hold promise for reducing greenhouse gases and solving this global challenge.” If everyone plays their part, we can work together to respond to global warming concerns.

Here are some ideas of how you and your family can help out.

There are also ways you can support your own community.

green checkMinimize your family’s resource use. You can use a carbon footprint calculator, such as that provided by The Nature Conservancy, to work out what your impact on the planet is and then agree some ways to reduce it.

green checkPut in place some energy saving systems at home. Check out the U.S. Department of Energy’s website for some ideas and inspiration.

green checkVolunteer with, or donate to, a local organization whose mission is to tackle climate change in your area.

green checkJoin and participate in an online forum where global warming issues are discussed and addressed.

green checkLearn more about global warming, greenhouse gases, emissions and other issues related to climate change.

Global Warming Facts

National Geographic-- Catastropic Climate Change

Together -- National Geographic, the IPCC, the UN and the UN Foundation -- have produced a new short film outlining the facts, showing the impacts and providing a way forward in combating catastrophic climate change.

Watch this call to action for world leadership on climate change. It's a moving tribute to the UN scientific reports that erased any doubt over global warming's existence, and helped shove climate change to the top of the international agenda.
