The Whispering Winds – Are They Ready to Power America?
Wind Energy The wind has been powering our planet’s weather systems since the beginning of time. With soaring electricity prices and the realization that most of our current energy resources are unsustainable has come a focus on alternative clean energy sources. And one that is receiving much attention is wind power.

Wind is created when the uneven heat in the atmosphere interacts with the Earth’s uneven surface and the rotation of the Earth. This can then be converted into electricity which can, in turn, be transferred into the national grid and supplied around the whole country. It is also possible to have smaller community-sized wind farms as well as single household installations. Worldwide, wind power is now considered to be the fastest growing energy resource. According to Wind Powering America “Today, U.S. wind energy installations produce enough electricity on a typical day to power the equivalent of more than 9.7 million homes”.
The American Wind Energy Association believes that “with this simple and increasingly popular technology, individuals can generate their own power and cut their energy bills while helping to protect the environment.” The biggest issue with providing wind power is the size of the turbines and these can be the cause of much opposition from local communities who are worried about the aesthetics of a wind farm. There are also concerns that wind turbines can have detrimental effects on avian life, like bats and birds. “As concerns about climate change and air quality continue to mount”, notes the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, “wind energy can provide residents and businesses with the electricity they need without the harmful emissions associated with conventional electricity generation sources”.

Or if you are really serious about a cleaner, greener energy source for your family, check out the household-sized turbines that can power your own home. And you might even end up selling your excess wind-generated electricity back to the national grid! ![]()
