About Polar Bears

Polar bears are the largestMom & baby polar bear terrestrial carnivore on the planet and the world of ice is their kingdom. But life as they know it is increasingly under threat.

“the polar bear is a keystone species at the top of the food web in the arctic seas, which include some of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems.”

Why are Polar Bears Threatened?

Polar bears spend several hours each day submerged in chilly arctic waters. Feeding on seals, whales, fish and birds; they stock up on fat to keep warm. Male polar bears have been known to weigh up to a massive 600kg.Polar bear in water

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) explains that “the polar bear is a keystone species at the top of the food web in the arctic seas, which include some of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems”. In general the polar bear is an excellent indicator of the status of these ecosystems. There are approx 20,000 polar bears today, with the population decreasing. So is it finally time to be concerned?

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) Red List, which classifies endangered species, has identified the polar bear as vulnerable and believes that climate change is one of the major threats to polar bear survival. The Defenders of Wildlife are increasingly worried that scientists have now confirmed that polar bears living in Hudson Bay, Canada are having less babies and more of them are dying at birth.

Polar bears are so vulnerable because of:

.

green check Global warming leading to a loss of ice flows and habitat.

green check Declining habitat quality.

green check The impact of toxic contaminants.

green check Increased human contact through shipping and tourism.

green check Damage to habitats from oil and gas exploration.

green check Poor hunting quota management systems.

green check Illegal poaching.

Polar bears have low reproductive rates and live for a long time. This means their ability to adapt to rapid changes in thePolar bear wet environment is greatly reduced. The ICUN believes it “seems unlikely that polar bear will be able to adapt to the current warming trend in the Arctic”.

You can help protect polar bears by:

green check Minimize your greenhouse gas emissions through reducing, reusing and recycling where you can.

green check Support the work of organizations like WFF and Defenders of Wildlife.

green check Buy organic products to keep toxic pollutants out of the environment.

green check Adopt a polar bear to help encourage changes to protection laws and treaties.

green check Purchase products made from recycled goods or in green packaging.

green check Practic organic gardening techniques to keep polutants out of the water and drainage systems.

National Geographic-- Catastrophic Climate Change

Together -- National Geographic, the IPCC, the UN and the UN Foundation -- have produced a new short film outlining the facts, showing the impacts and providing a way forward in combating catastrophic climate change.

Watch this call to action for world leadership on climate change. It's a moving tribute to the UN scientific reports that erased any doubt over global warming's existence, and helped shove climate change to the top of the international agenda.
