Eco-Travel: Responsible Travel Protecting People, Profit and the PlanetHolidays used to be all about enjoying a destination and leaving little thought for the place we had just visited. But in a world confronted by global warming and diminishing natural resources, “it's about ensuring that visitors travel responsibly, help protect the wildlife they are visiting and contribute to the well-being of local communities”(Source: Conservation International ) Why Eco-Travel?At its very heart, ecotourism is about providing a source of revenue for managing and caring for the environment in the place that you visit. It is not about simply encouraging people to travel somewhere just because it is a beautiful place. According to Conservation International, “it's about ensuring that visitors travel responsibly, help protect the wildlife they are visiting and contribute to the well-being of local communities”. The aim of eco-travel is to help save some of the planet’s most fantastic natural places by visiting in a sustainable and responsible way. Conservation International explains, “Ecotourism only works when it yields economic benefits to local people, supports conservation and reduces the human impact of travel”. This means that eco-travel requires the educated involvement of everyone involved, including the tourists, the travel industry, the local tour operators and the local community. The International Ecotourism Society is focused on ecotourism becoming a part of everyday life by making “tourism a viable tool for conservation, protection of bio-cultural diversity, and sustainable community development”. Eco-Travel - How Green is My Travel?
New Zealand is an example of a country where ecotourism is an important part of a visitor's experience. As a nation they market themselves on a clean, green image and their tourism industry is no different. Their landscapes are breathtaking, New Zealand is home to an enormous number of endemic species, including the kiwi, and none of their reptiles, amphibians or mammals are found anywhere else on the planet. The cultural and indigenous experience is a key part of visiting this country.

It is important however to distinguish between a venture that is simply incorporating sustainable practices into their business and one that truly embraces the ecotourism vision.
