Electric Cars – Time to Clean Up America’s Air

About Electric Automobiles

As we are bombarded with images of our highways clogged with smog and gas prices increase seemingly unchecked, alternative solutions to our transportation needs must be urgently found.Plug it in

Why Electric Cars?

The gas and diesel we pour into our cars has significant impacts on our health and on our environment. The Environmental Defense Fund tells us that “U.S. autos emit more than 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, more than one-fifth of the nation's total carbon dioxide emissions”. When a car burns gas it also emits carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, lead and a stack of other nasty pollutants. The EDF says that compared with the rest of the world, American auto emissions are disproportionately high. “With only 5 percent of the world's population and 30 percent of the world's automobiles, the United States contributes 48 percent of the world's automotive CO2 emissions”, they say.

Any serious effort to fight global warming must include cutting greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. This can be done through reducing our vehicle use as well as reducing our dependency on fossil fuels and finding alternative energy sources to power our automobiles. Electric cars are increasingly being considered as a viable solution to air pollution and global warming.

Whilst electric cars form a minute component of America’s automobile industry, they are making an impact. Electric cars are powered through a normal electricity system but also require a battery back to concert the electricity into mechanical power. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that the benefits of electric cars are that they do not produce tailpipe emissions.

Electric Cars of the future

No Gas

Currently, electric cars do tend to cost more than the equivalent gas models. However, as consumers become increasingly aware of the additional benefits for our health and the environment and are reassured that they will not lose any quality, then the costs of electric cars should become more comparable.

You can help America manage this major pollution issue by:

green checkLook at options for your work place to make a change in the vehicle fleet to electric cars.

green checkInvestigate options for a hybrid automobile (which is both petrol and electric).

  • Reduce the amount of plastic garbage you produce.
    • Stop drinking bottled water; filter your own.
    • Don’t release balloons or allow plastic bags to fly away - animals try to eat these items.
    • Recycle plastics and other items.
