Tackling America’s Mountain of Waste - Reduce Reuse Recycle!

November 15 America Recycles Day

About Waste and the need to Recycle

America is literally being suffocated by the garbage we throw into landfills every day. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection TrashAgency (EPA), “Each year, Americans generate millions of tons of waste in our homes and communities.” Every day, in everything we do, we leave behind a trail of waste.

Why so much waste?

This waste mountain is created by our insatiable desire for goods and consumables that have increasingly short lives and are delivered with unnecessary packaging. “One of the most common reasons Americans give for not recycling is that they don't know how, when, where and what to recycle in their communities,” says Keep America Beautiful (KAB).

This may seem like an overwhelming problem, however, there is a hopeful side to this story. Communities across the country are starting to tackle our massive waste pollution problem. Every year on November 15, America Recycles Day is celebrated. “This day is a nationally-recognized initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home and at work,” explains KAB. Not only are people throughout America coming up with innovative ways to reuse and recycle materials, they are working hard on reducing their resource use and also beautifying the environment through community clean ups.

National Geographic-- Catastrophic Climate Change

Together -- National Geographic, the IPCC, the UN and the UN Foundation -- have produced a new short film outlining the facts, showing the impacts and providing a way forward in combating catastrophic climate change.

Watch this call to action for world leadership on climate change. It's a moving tribute to the UN scientific reports that erased any doubt over global warming's existence, and helped shove climate change to the top of the international agenda.
