Capturing the Energy of the Sun to Power Our Lives; Solar PowerSince the dawn of time people have turned to the sun to capture its energy and now we are looking to the sun to help power our future. In America, we generate most of our electricity from unsustainable fossil fuels, hydroelectric dams or nuclear power. These can all create massive environmental damage in different ways. What we need is a source of power that is renewable with minimal environmental impacts, and solar power may just be the answer.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, solar power is a type of alternative energy that “dramatically lowers pollution emissions, reduces environmental health risks, and slows the depletion of finite natural resources”. Photo-voltaic solar panels are used to convert sunlight directly into electricity, which can then be transferred to our homes, businesses and communities.
Solar power is well known as a clean green alternative energy source and there are very few environmental impacts resulting from this type of power. The panels themselves can be an eyesore as they are sometimes quite large and need to be in an open space (which more often than not is on a roof). If you are serious about installing solar power into your home or business it pays to do your research as the materials used in the manufacture of solar panels can sometimes be hazardous at the end of their life.

For people involved in a business, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) runs the Green Power Partnership. This is a voluntary program which supports green power through offering expert advice and resources. The Green Power Partnership can “help your organization lower the transaction costs of buying green power, reduce its carbon footprint, and communicate its leadership to key stakeholders,” says the EPA. ![]()
